Senegal stands at a pivotal moment in both its energy transition and its pathway to industrialisation. Under Vision Sénégal 2050, the development framework adopted by the government elected in 2024, the country has set out an industrial model built on its extractive resources, primarily oil and gas. With first production at the vast Sangomar field and the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project now underway, and major thermal plants being converted from heavy fuel oil to liquefied natural gas, this gas-led industrial path is already being laid. Such a trajectory risks locking the energy system into long-lived fossil assets and continuing external dependency at the moment renewable costs are falling and green industrialisation is gathering momentum across the continent.
